Has anyone found any good new strings to try, I still think £12:95 for Elixirs is to expensive. I'm still wondering has anyone made a cheaper better string, it was back in 2008 I posted this very popular thread.

How much are you paying for your strings, and how long do they last.

Hey, Mike - some of us stil here, though I think John and I take it in turns to be the 'lastest post' author at the end of most threads on the front page. I still check in most days, but not much seems to be happening.

Have to confess, my Avalon is feeling a bit deserted at the moment - been playing my standard-tuned OM more of late - especially since I saw Toby Walker last week: great blues guitarist, if you don't know him.

But now you and John have my piqued my attention : what are these wonderful strings at £5.90 a pack then? I tend to use D'Addario EXP 12s on my OM for standard and D'Addario True Mediums on my L32. Both are quite pricey, but as I haven't ever (believe it or not) broken a string on either guitar, the cost of D'Addarios doesn't worry me unduly.

Hi.boombox, John and I were sharing a joke from a private message lol, I know John would agree that your post's are up there with the best. I must check out Toby Walker, I love to hear great guitarist's.

The new string on the block is http://www.amazon.co.uk/Martin-Lifespan ... =8-1-fkmr1

I'm must try these, Elixir reminds me of Red Bull way to expensive. For me strings wear out and no I don't have sweaty fingers, I play about an hour a day sometimes more. I must say though, most guitarist want to put on the best strings they can buy and get the best sound so they automatically assume, the most expensive are best.

A guitar string is a guitar string, I just think we are brainwashed into thinking "I MUST HAVE THE BEST" when the're not the best.

When I first posted this tread, many many guitarist replied, but none could honestly swear Elixir were three times better, but the're three times the price. A very good guitar luthier told me they were cheap strings wound. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind Elixir strings but there's no way you can justify that price.

You really should check out Toby Walker - if Jorma thinks he's good enough to teach at the Fur Peace Ranch, then he's certainly no slouch. He can play the whole gamut of acoustic blue styles and is a nice bloke too.

Great thread!

I use Elixirs all the time, I do like the sound and I've experimented with lots of other makes.
While I can't say the Elixirs are 3 times better, I can say that for me at least, they last more than
3 times longer. Personally I like a bright tone and the nanowebs give me that and retain if for
longer.

Forgive me guys
I use to play D'Addario EJ16 or EJ26
Last six string packs I bought were 8€ and 9€.
The set lasts for ever. I don't use to change strings too often. I know this impacts the sound negatively, but I play for myself and can accept it.

Great post. I too find (older) uncoated strings on my Avalon sound fine, but my Collings is far more sensitive to older strings, especially the low E. And I agree, if you can live with it yourself, then why change strings? I did buy a set of Elixirs a while back, but have not used them. Am planning to stick them on my Yamaha AEX500, which I am about to sell - the current strings are just too old and I couldn't in all conscience sell a guitar with three year old strings on.
