AS201 Silver Series nut width?

Postby pkelecy » 16 May 2012, 13:54

Hi All,

New to the forum. I have an opportunity on an Avalon AS201 Silver Series. The guitar is not local, so I can't actually play it, but the reviews and sound clips I've seen have generally been good. So I'm tempted. One concern though is the nut width. I asked the seller what is was, and he said (per his measurement) 1-5/8". Wow, that is narrow! So I decided to check the web and found conflicting information. Some show it at 43mm and others 45mm. So what is it? I would prefer a wider neck (for fingerstyle) and could live with (I think) 45mm (maybe even 44mm). But if it's 43mm or less, I think that may be a show stopper. I hope not though, as would I really like to give this a try.

Thanks for any feedback. I appreciate it.

It will be closer to 43mm on all Silver models.

Checked Internet and eBay shows 45mm for the AS 201 and for the AS 200. I have an AS 200 which I have just measured at 43 mm. I predominatly finger pick and I have no issue with spacing.

Hope this helps.

When it comes to accurate details on guitars ebay is not the best source
The standard spec for the Silvers was 43mm neck ... this can vary by about 0.5mm depending on how thick the lacquer was applied.

Thanks for all the responses on this. I guess my main concern is how cramped the strings might feel when played fingerstyle. For those of you that own an AS201 and another guitar with a wider 1.75" (44.5mm) nut, can you tell the difference switching between them? I know 1.5mm doesn't seem like much, but I was at a guitar shop the other day playing different models and could definitely feel the difference between those with a 1-11/16" nut and those with 1-3/4". The 1-3/4" felt better to my hands.

Assuming AS201 doesn't work out, does Avalon make any other, inexpensive, models that have a wider neck?

Not sure what your budget is or where you are located, but scour evilbay. I have seen Irish Golds for £6-700 and Czech Golds for even less. There's an L25 on there at the moment too for even less again.

I'm located in the US. Budget is somewhat flexible, but would like to be under $500, if possible. Sounds like that might be a stretch though for a "Gold". I assume those have a wider nut. Is that right? I guess I'll keep a look out on eBay and see what shows up.

Thanks!
