Sounds of Silence

Postby the greypicker » 18 Jan 2012, 12:10

Hello Everyone

We seem to have gone very quiet on the forum lately.

I reckon this is because our Avalon guitars are so good that we spend all our leisure time playing them, rather than burbling away on line. It isn't like this on other forums with less satisfying guitars.

What do you think?

John, there may be some truth in your suggestion. My Avalon has been getting to grips with Martin Simpson songs of late. I have only recently begun to explore his stuff in detail and am looking forward to seeing him in Bristol in March, followed two days later by Preston Reed at the same venue, though however inspiring the latter is, I know my playing limitations!! Have just restrung the guitar with D'Addario DADGAD "True Mediums" and so far so good, though I'll have to give them a while longer to make any real judgement - at the moment it could be just new strings, as opposed to the old dead ones.

As for the lack of posts, where is everybody? Maybe I'll start a couple of threads similar to what is usually fairly active on the Collings board - might inspire a few to post. However, I do almost feel embarassed to post these days - check out just how many sub-forums I have the last post on. :D

Hi Boombox

I love DADGAD tuning and always have one guitar rigged that way. I have never used a DADGAD set, though, just tuned a regular set up or down.

I might follow you on the D'Addarios, although I prefer lighter sets that are easier to fret and easier to bend and let me play longer.

Please try some of the Colling threads on here. The Avalon Forum has always had a soft spot with me, full of nice people who rarely ever have a cross word or a negative thing to say about the guitars!

Long may you strum!

John

Up to now, I've always used 11s or 12s, but I thought I'd give them a go. Though I know what you mean about lighter gauges - far easier to play, though you do sacrifice some tone. I was abit of a doubter until I went from 11s to 12s on the Collings. Have only ever used 12s or these DADGADs on the Avalon. Similarly, have tried a few makes and keep going back to D'Addario on both.
