Removing marks caused by Rubber

Postby Fletch » 04 Nov 2011, 21:41

Hi there, after using an Inteli Tuner on my Avalon L32 I now have a black smudge where the rubber made contact. Is there a known method for safely removing this black smudge that any one unfortunate enough to have suffered a similar fate may have used? I guess it has reacted with the finish and I don't want to tackle this without seeking some advice first

Hi Fletch

Commiserations!

The world is full of guitar stands and tuners with rubber pads that react with the nitro-cellulose on guitars. Lots of threads out there with lots of annoyed players. :x

Jim may well know of some miracle cure, but the general consensus appears to be that you have to live with it, unless you want to refinish the the whole area.

If you do find a cure, please let us all know!

Hi Simon,

Good results can be had from using a wax polish like G10 available from most decent car parts stores, or if you're passing our way we'll take a look at it for you.
A more aggressive approach would be to use a product called Panel Wipe but this needs to be done very carefully.

Cheers

Thanks for responding guys,

I think I can live with it until I get the chance to come visit the factory, probably in the new year sometime. I don't want to try anything that might make a mess of the fine craftmanship. Thanks again

Probably yes, but this is the first time I hear this.
Apart from the obvious answer (not to keep the guitar on the stand for long), do you know any preventive solution (covering rubber with something, for example) which allows to keep the guitar on the stand?

Nevertheless, I had once (many years ago, uff) a 12 string guitar (Framus, btw) that my dad crashed one night because it was on the stand and he didn't see it. That experience taught me to keep the guitar into its case as soon as I finish playing (and clean it a bit).

Cheers

Hi Lentin

I found this in my research! :!:

I think it would be easier to stick some microfibre or cloth on the stand, though! Keeping the guitar in the case is a great idea, but not always possible!
