Avalon used in Whaling convention protest!!!

Postby Rick Jones » 14 Jul 2011, 02:21

Hey guys, I have been involved in anti whaling issues for a few years now, but this year the International Whaling Commission held their annual meeting in my home Island of Jersey.....so I got involved in the protest with some of my buddies from Sea Shepherd!

Thus my guitar has been wielded at a couple of benefit gigs, and outside the Hotel where the conference is held, and tomorrow, as well as another gig at the UK premier of 'Minds in the Water', a film by the founders of Surfers for Cetaceans, featuring Jack Johnson amongst others, I'm going to record a few songs with Howie Cooke, the thirty year activist and artist who founded S4C!

My Avalon, being my weapon of choice, has seen much action throughout!

Watched the promo on Youtube ... thought provoking stuff.

Here's photo I took of a humpback whale, me and my wife were on a trip to Australia in 2003 and went on a whale watching cruise, nobody could've known how close they would come to the boat but it was an incredible afternoon, at one point we had whales, dolphins and flying fish all swimming along-side the boat, memories that'll never leave me.
One humpback whale came within about 12 feet of the boat, tilted to the side and just watched us as he/she glided past ... time kinda just froze and I defy anyone who says they can't connect or recognise the intellgence and sentient conciousness behind those eyes ! :D

Sorry for the low quality photo, the original is much better. It was a lucky photo too, I was just aiming out to the horizon checking white balance levels when the whale broke the surface ... couldn't believe it.

Way to go Rick! Big honk from the Riverdog horn. My son & I living on the coast of Florida have always loved & stood up for sea & river life. We also have protected sea turtle nests. We often experience seeing dolphin in the wild. My brother Jim is doing a swim across the St. John's River Sunday the 17th in helping to raise awareness for the St. John's River Keeper to maintain a healthy river. He is the first to do so and is getting wide news coverage. This river is brackesh and dolphin swim 30 to 60 miles in from the ocean to feed on the mullett and such. I often can look out my window in the summer and early fall months and see dolphin pods feeding in the river! I have fished in the intracoastal waters and had them next to my boat as well. In fact I did a Youtube Video in support of tomorrows event on my brother Jim's website jumpingfish.com...The song is an original called St. John that I also did on my YTC in the 3rd episode. (Greypicker is familiar with this tune :) )...So bro while we can't stand beside you there, we are with you here doing what we can for our sea and river life. Btw I just got back from the USVI/West Indies and I took "Ava" my Avalon S201 and featured her in 3 videos I recorded from my cabin off the coast there. My son and I saw some beautiful sealife while helmet diving in St. Thomas... So we are getting Avalon out there & everywhere we can!

PS Rick & John, there is a little surprise for you both at the end of my first video. It will post in about two weeks so stay tuned!

Hi Rick,
Maybe you know this already, but there is an older song out there that might fit your song list. 'Save the Whales' by Country Joe McDonald. Easy tune (Em and Dm), but you can do a lot with it. Its probably on youtube somewhere. People like it.
