For my sons!

Postby Rick Jones » 09 Jun 2011, 22:35

I just did this in front of the little Zoom H4, I'm getting the hang of it now!

This is me and my L32 one take, no fx or Eq.
I stole the arrangement from Nic Jones, I don't think he'll mind!

Really enjoyed this! :D

Have been following your uploads with interest. I know there has been talk of your style in the other thread, but while I agree vocally there is something in that, I do envy your ability to play in different styles, even within the same song. Jealous? Moi? Too right!! :)

BTW, did you work this one out or did you find a tab for it - my daughter loves this tune.

Thanks  that's awesome of you to say! I pretty much listen to everything and anything, and grew up in a house with about ten musicians... some of it had to rub off! :D
I've spent my whole life doing everyone elses tech stuff rather than play myself until recently, but I never take my eyes and ears off musicians, and presuming they have the same amount of limbs and digits as me, I figure I can try what they do! Happy to help you if ever you're stuck on something I know about, just ask! :D

I have kind of known this song on guitar since I was a kid...but it was locked away in my archives somewhere....then last night I went on a Nic Jones mix on youtube and his (far superior) version came on, and it made me think of my boys, so I tried to remember how I played it!

Here's Nic doing it....amazing;

I will have a go at tabbing it if you like, the chords are just E, B and A and the notes are all 'inside' the chords. I'll tab it if I can figure out how!

Thanks again for all the kind words!!! :D

Hey Rick,
Just got home from work and to relax I buzz the forum and was excited to see more RJ art. It don't get any better than playin' ur git with and for ur boyz and this was fun to listen to, great job as always.
I then listened to Crossed the Line and this is where you have carved out the Rick Jones style that is all your own. Btw what you call a mistake sounded pretty cool! Thats how the magic happens sometimes!
Then I listened to Misiduo, sorry for the misspel. This is different with an alternate vibe goin' back and forth and nice harmonics. I like the phrasing around the 1:30 mark. Very interesting tune, can you explain the title and backround thought on this one?
Again I like Wolves alot, can't wait to hear the finish on that one too!
Well bro, you truly have a way of extracting every ounce of tone from ur L32. You seem to travel the backroads of the fretboard so to speak and find little stories to tell thru the combination of tones, and notes. Then add the colors of your voice and well, I am amazed! Very unique. 8)
Cheers,
eric

Hey Eric, thanks!!!

The Misi titled clips on that page are just demos of my pickup straight into the soundcard, as someone asked me to do it on the AGF!

That piece is just a way of combining a bass, mid and high (harmonics) to give an idea how the pickup sounds in those ranges with no EQ etc. It's purely improvised, it was all I could think of to do.

You can see how/why here;

Thanks for the kind words on my playing man, I really appreciate that, as you are no slouch yourself!! :D

Bro you must have cracked up when I asked you about the Misi. "tune"  I'm just not up on all the tech stuff, but now I understand after readin' up on the AGF thread. I'm a bit old school but I'm learnin' little by little. But hey it sounded interestingly cool to me!
I'm so goofy sometimes, I crack myself up!
Time for a brew, cheers my brother!

Thanks JB! :D

I was fortunate enough to hear Nic Jones a few times close up around 1970 and he was a fabulous live performer. (I went the whole hog and bought a Fylde Oberon in admiration!). He stood out among the many greats who were around then.

I always thought his recordings, although tremendous, didn't quite capture that live sound of his. I seem to remember him holding on to the notes a little bit longer and getting more of a drone effect out of those tunings he developed.

Speaking of greats, here's another parent/child song written by Ewan McColl and sung by Dick Gaughan. What an atmosphere he creates with that D28 and his amazing voice?! :D

Keep the good stuff coming! :D

Thanks John!!
I've seen Nic live too, but I was too young to appreciate it! Way too young!!
I'd love to have a time machine and go back and see some gigs!
His arrangement of Canadee-i-o is sublime.....just so unique!

Thanks for that song, very nice, dark in subject but loving at the same time!

I wish I could get that lilt when I sing, but it just isn't there....if I do it you can tell I'm putting it on and it doesn't sound natural. My friend Patrick has the opposite problem...he makes anything he sings sound like an Irish song, Eagles numbers, Jackson Browne.....anything! Between us we should get a nice balance in a duo!!

Funnily, me and Eric were talking on PMs and I sent him Nic Jones Canadee-i-o as he hadn't heard it....we both agree vocally he has a very similar tone to yourself, which is awesome to say the least!! :D
