Guitars you sold and wished you hadn't...

Erm ... a Brook Bovey miniature guitar and a Kinkade Kingsdown. Most of the rest are not missed as they were rightly replaced by something better! I reckon my Avalon S32 is the nicest of the lot, but I'd still be interested to line up all the guitars I ever owned and play them side by side.

simonc,
it all balances out bud, i've gladly invested in your economy with several g's towards irish lutherie! besides we need help here in america cuz our prez is bankrupting us, so thankyou for your contribution! i just came back from a caribbean cruise and hooked up with some folk that live just up the street from the avalon shop and they were so nice and fun to hang out with. i told them to get their kids started on playin' guitar and to buy local from the best. btw, one of the entertainers on the ship was a guitarist from the phillipines by the name of pedro de llana and this cat was phenomenal! he played all the parts to bohemian rhapsody simultaneousy on his nylon stringer. he was gracious enough to come to my cabin for a little jam and recording on my computer...i bought all three of his cd's, so there is my contribution to the phillipine economy...ya see its all good! now i've got the gas for an avalon crossover/nylon, if i hadn't spent a fortune on the cruise! see simon, the cycle continues... 8)
cryin' on my estaban nylon stringer,

A Martin 000-28EC, just wish I loved that guitar more than I did. I guess I'm not an orchestra body type of guy. Also sold an Alvarez K. Yairi signature model that I never should have parted with. In two weeks I'll have my introduction to Avalon. Purchased a used DS100 in Ottawa. I had the great pleasure of playing some of the Irish Golds when my local folklore centre used to carry them 7 years ago. Wasn't financially set up to buy one at the time and the centre no longer carries them. :( It's starting to look like I'll be in Ireland in 2012 for a couple of weeks so the plan is to save my pennies(thousands of them :D ) and purchase a Gold or legacy model. I can hardly wait.

Big three irish rule, but throw in some usa goodall too!!!

Postby riverdog » 29 Aug 2010, 16:20

i'm with you on that john! here in florida i'm surrounded predominantly with martins and taylors, and while they are fine instruments and i've played many good ones; however, their voice is very different from the "big three irish"... i havn't had the pleasure of playing a mcilroy yet, but as you know i've owned two lowdens and now one really sweet avalon...the closest american guitar that has the lush, open, angelic voice that compares to a lowden or an avalon imho is a goodall... as i mentioned in a previous post my custom made hog/cedar concert jumbo is incredible! i don't know if you all get much access to them but i think you would enjoy the voice of goodall for fingerstyle and strumming...so there is my top three; avalon, goodall, and lowden! now if i could just learn to play them properly!!! 8) i'm slowly retooling my old setup with protools and maybe in the future i can put up a comparison; but schools in and time is little with gettin' my boy learned although he's jammin' nicely on some blues right now!!! good to see your post john, hope all is well with your family. my oldest in the marines is now in moscow at the embassy if i had'nt told you already...God bless, riverdog out... 8) p.s. if you want to hear the piano-like sounds of a goodall check out Pier Lim on youtube especially covering L. Juber's "let it be"...this is very much what my goodall sounds like or actually goodall's signature tone across most his models and tonewoods; very responsive up and down the neck...and Pier is a beautiful, expressive player...i love L. Juber because he doesn't go over the top, he is expressive and allows the tone as well as the melody to move you. his version of "While my guitar gently weeps" is my favorite version...to me he is the jeff beck of the acoustic...enjoy mates!!! 8)

Ovation Legend 12 string, (shallow bowl); not a patch on my two Avalon 12 strings, but just wish I had never sold it!
Also, back in the late sixties when I was playing bass in various groups, I had an original Hofner violin (beatle) bass; wish I had never sold that either!!

I had a Guild Jumbo once that really threw the bass out...and I like that big bottom end in guitars....not like the Martin bottom end, like almost a muted thumpy attack sound with a sub feeling, but a rich growl that seemed to come from behind the guitar somehow. I haven't found it in another acoustic yet, including other '70's J50's I've tried. My Avalon has a little of it, but is nicer overall with fatter trebles....but I miss that roaring bass!

Well I sold that guitar to buy and electric...and now I never play electric!
The folly of youth eh?

John :o

Hi John, have a look at my thread "Avalon No.2" posted late last year, and that will explain all. I simply LOVE my new S32/12; it is so small and light whilst having a truly sweet and refined sound, but still has plenty of projection. It is being gigged regularly and I often get compliments on the fantastic sound!
I have now decided to sell the larger A32CE/12 as it is not getting played so..........interested? (Is this the best thread for this)?

PS. I would be happy to post pictures if I knew how :?

Cheers..............Brian
