Strings Snapping

Postby Walesy » 12 Jan 2010, 17:20

Hi all!

I've encountered a problem with my L32, its snapping strings :(

First it snapped a G string just as I fitted it, then I bought a new pack of strings and it snapped a top E string as I fitted it, so I put it down to a weird co-incidence and bought another set of strings only to find that the top E snapped straight away AGAIN :( The strings are snapping about half way up the guitar, not at either end.

So I can only assume its a problem with the guitar! Funnily enough I had been thinking about trading it up for a Premier series recently, perhaps it knows!

So has anyone got any suggestions as to whats causing this problem - obviously I want to have it rectified before selling the guitar. I'd be grateful for any help :D

I had that problem with an Ibanez. The neck is a bit deformed, but the guitar was more than 20 year old when it happened. I can't believe it's your problem, even more when the broken strings are differents.

I would take the guitar to a luthier. Probably with a simple quick check will discover the reason.

About selling the L32, I own one and I find it the best balanced guitar I've ever played. It's be a pity...

Good luck

I would assume its not the same problem as the guitar was brand new this time last year and hasnt left the house since being bought! :D

I would only sell it to upgrade, its a fantastic guitar!

just to throw it in, if anyone's thinking about selling an L32 cutaway i'd be very interested in buying one second hand in a couple of months

If I'm reading your post correctly the strings are breaking without playing but as you've just fitted them and tuning up ... is this correct ?

If yes then I would think it's more a problem with the strings, especially if snapping in the middle. Strings are made in huge amounts and it's possible to have a suspect batch.

As a test buy a completely different brand of the same gauge and see if it still happens.

Thanks for the reply. Yes you're correct the strings are snapping as I'm fitting them/tuning them up.

Im using the same brand of strings, but they've been bought at completely different times from different sellers, Im also restringing my other guitars at the same time with the same brand of strings with no problems. I will buy a different brand though as a test and report back with what happens :)

Well i just fitted a new set of a different brand and guess what............................................ they went on fine! :D

Looks like that's the nail in the coffin for Elixirs for me, there's a certain member on here who will be happy! I've been using them for a few years and have loved them but maybe as they've got more and more popular their quality has slipped! :o

Thanks for the feeback JB :)

I am always careful to emply there are several wraps around the tuner post and that the wraps do not cross over as this can cause the string to shear off.
