Postby Butz » 26 Nov 2009, 07:35

Hi everyone, just joined the forum (what a wonderful place it is) and my opening question is; "What size of strings are recommended for my Silver Series AS-101CE". I'd like to keep them as standard cause i dont like messin around with nuts. But thats another story

Silver Strings

Postby MIKE 450 » 30 Nov 2009, 20:53

Hi Butz, I have played a AS-101CE for seven years now,I just love this guitar.I have roamed around the music stores in Belfast trying to find a guitar to match it,but failed.

While busking in Belfast a while back,I spent an afternoon in music stores plugged and unplugged trying to find a better guitar "no good" tried all different acoustics you name it I tried it.

I told the owner of one store, that it's just me I'm so used to my own guitar. But I must say it's a beautiful- simple -well balanced-lovely sounding guitar with a fantastic Fishman Prefix onboard---what else do you need--the perfect workhorse for any musicain!

The owner then invited me to play he's guitar "What is it I asked" back he came with a smile a cheeky smile--he opened the case--and there it was "A TAYLOR" EMM Looks nice--I played it for 2 minutes and said YES this guitar is better than mine--it was beautiful to beautiful and sounded fantastic.

The down side however was--it was £4000 --my guitar was £300---I told him I'd never Busk or GIG with a beauty like that---but YES what a wonderful guitar.

Also a trip to the Avalon workshop which is close to my home also revealed more beauties which match that Taylor.

Still I've went overboard once again---WHICH STRINGS YOU ASK! everyone on this forum knows what I think about strings LOL --check out my thread "coated strings are condom strings" the question of string choice still makes me laugh---TRY THEM ALL!

Thanks Mike and Lentin, i've had the silver for just over a year now and i agree with everything you say about the AS101CE and only to add that i find the arm is an absolute dream to play. The frets and action are spot-on. Been using Elixir phos-bronze nanos for eight years and, for me anyway, they stay brighter, longer. The guitar came to me (used) with 12's and i was just wondering if that was the correct gauge. Was gonna try 13's, as you do!

Hi Butz, Yeah I've tried 11-12 and 13--I played in a busking compitition for 4 hours with 13 guage and it was great for stumming but sore on the finger tips.

I'm now using 11's non coated --because I like to bend strings--and because I'm playing an electric acoustic--it's a simple case of turning up my amp/pa.

I was a lead guitarist for many years playing strat and tele---but even when I played electric guitars I love to use 11's

But I must say if your tunning down on acoustic 13's are fine --but for standard tunning or playing in EADEAE which I love to do--I like 11's for the simple reason --you can throw in loads of bends ---lead runs etc---when your a 52 year old it's nice to take it easy on the old finger tips.

AS for types of strings--that's up to you----just make sure you play your songs/tunes to other people----the idea being WE MAKE OTHER FOLKS HAPPY.

Mike, enjoyed your story about busking for 4hours and it reminded me of the late Eamonn McGirr who, in 1996, was named in "The Guinness Book of Records" as long-distance busker champion of the world. He sang for..... wait for it...... 11 days and 20 minutes!! He was a teacher turned folk-singer, from stroke city, and was a member of The Go Lucky Four back in the day. Wonder what gauge o'string he used  Lentin, family and friends can indeed be a very tough audience and your harshest critics, but its probably based on jealousy. Well.... thats what i tell myself

Yeah I agree Butz, that old jelousy! I must admit when I'm in Americia/Canada everyone loves me,but sadly at home your "that know it all-thinks he's great-------"

Still I always remind people when playing that I have no EGO---I always give everyone the chance to sing/play --then when they all shy away --I'll play.

Thanks for telling me about Eamonn McGirr--I must look into that--what a GIG----THREE CHEERS EAMONN---The funny side of me thinking what was he on--BUCKFAST/COKE/MAGIC-MUSROOMS---did he sleep--you mentioned stoke city-- did he have a stoke after this---is that why they call it stroke city LOL

I'd guess he was playing coated 9 guage strings with a pair of gloves on----I will look forward to learning all I can about Eamonn---I will write a song about him titled "PLAY IT AGAIN EAMONN"

Seriously Butz--thanks for that--I'll be looking into this BIG STYLE
