Do you use to play using a capo?

Postby Lentin » 23 Oct 2009, 21:13

Watching some YouTube videos, many of Avalon players (mostly fingerpickers) use capo (2nd fret, mainly).
I have to say that I never use it (only for Here comes the Sun, probably).

Do you use to play with capo? With lower tension?

Cheers

I use a capo for different reasons. Its a quick and easy way to transpose a song into a differnt key. Then there are other songs that (to me anyway) sound a bit sweeter with a capo, like Ashoken Farewell. Also, when I play some faster flatpicking reels, I capo up, maybe to the fifth because its easier to play....frets are a bit closer and its right in front of you. Also, when I am jaming with others, I'll capo up to add a bit of mandolin flavor to a song. On top of that, sometimes my singing just doesnt fit on the lower frets, so....capo it up a few to where I can hit the notes. Just experiment. There arent any rules. Keep what you like and ditch what you dont.

use a capo depending on what kind of sound that I want my song to have. Sometimes a capo adds just the kind of tone I need. (ie. Here comes the sun) It would not sound the same without the capo.

Normally though I do not use a capo to transpose. I think it diminishes my skill as a player not to transpose manually. I guess in a pinch it is alright though.

I have experimented with the short capos also and recently have purchased a "spider " capo which is quite interesting. You can play above and below the capo and can capo individual strings. Here is the link which has some demonstrations. You can find it on youtube also,
