G string rattle in tuning machine

Postby frankhond » 06 Aug 2009, 18:00

Hi all, here is a little support question... Recently my A25 developed a rattle, which I isolated to open G string only. After removing strings, checking for loose ball ends, removing strap button plug, poking around inside the guitar, tightening the truss, I discovered that when I push my thumb hard into the back of the tuning machine of said G string the rattle stops. I loosened the string and tightened the screw at the end of the little handle. Also checked the nut around the thingie which you attach the string to (is this the tuining peg, or what is it called, my english seems to fail here).I dont have the right tool so I used pliers but the nut seemed pretty tight.

So what is the next step? Is the tuner messed up and needs replacement, or should I get the proper tool for the nut and disassemble the whole thing? How should I go about this?

Thanks

Mateusz

Update - I got a small wrench and tightened the nut around the peg, doublechecked everything. The rattle is still there. I also discovered that the beck plate of the tuning machine (the round plate with the avalon logo) is not quite in place, I can push it in a millimeter or so. When I push on this plate, the rattle goes away. So maybe something inside is rattling... what to do? JB, do I have to replace the tuning machine?

It sounds like you've narrowed it down to the tuner backplate, these plates are pressed into place by Gotoh during manufacture so I'm not privy to the tolerances used but it is very unusual for one of these to come loose ... if it can't be pressed into place enough to remain in a 'non-rattle" position then a replacement may be the only answer ... as long as that's definitely the cause of the rattle.

Ok! Thanks for the fast answer. I'm in Sweden - can I order a replacement direct from you?
