Drilling an endpin hole in an A201 for K&K Pure Mini

Postby e_rock17 » 10 Jul 2009, 22:28

I am the original owner of an A201 (#A00716). I'd like to install a pickup, K&K pure mini, which will require an end pin jack. The strap button is installed with a single screw, not an end pin.

According to K&K's instructions, they recommend a 1/2" forstner bit. (http://kksound.com/pdf/puremini.pdf)

Is there anything I need to be particularly careful with?

Thanks!

Eric

Hi Eric, nothing to worry about, take it slow and steady, you'll be alright.

Here is a video of a pickup being installed - it shows a good way to drill the hole. You really need to be careful - I have done a couple of these before with the wrong kind of drill and chipped a bit of wood away, rather spoiling the wood. The drills used here I think are called a step drill and a forstner drill, these can be bought on eBay or from hardare suppliers. I have seen an dendpin hole expanded with a reamer which seems to be a rather more expensive bit of kit. I think it may be a bit easier to create a new hole rather than expand an existing one. Anyway, good luck and hope this helps.

Don't worry about what goes on later in the video - it is a strange kind of transducer that needs a little channel routed out. Looks very complicated - I won't be trying that :-) http://www.carlosjuan.eu/index.php?id=43

I installed it Thursday night. I have to say, I am really impressed with the sound so far! Thanks for the advice and encouragement, it was actually much easier than I had intended.

I'm playing a gig on Sunday and I can't wait to hear it through the pa.
