Satin Finish on Avalons

Postby Jimbo » 30 Jun 2009, 00:14

How do you do that? I'm currently building an electric guitar and I was trying to get a similar sort of satin finish for the neck to an Avalon. Gave it a couple of coats of danish oil and which was getting pretty glossy so I just gave in and put some wax polish on and gave it a good buff up. Now it's gloss but both finishes I used claim a "soft sheen" type finish. What did I do wrong?

Cheers. :)

We use Nitro-Cellulose lacquer, a selection of finishing papers and finally '0000' extra fine steel wool for that satin finish.

Oh yea ... and a gentle touch

I see. So no buffing at all? Just a rub down with some steel wool at the end?

yes but rubbing lacquer with steel wool is not the same as rubbing oils or wax.

Ok, I'll leave this one as gloss and put it down to experience. Hopefully I'll manage a satin finish next time. :) Cheers.
