Repair to a small lacquer chip

Postby singlereed » 09 Jun 2009, 13:06

I managed to make a small chip in the finish of the neck of my S32 - a little bit of the finish has chipped away without apparently touching the wood itself. Not much more than the size of a pin-head but it's right on the back where I place my thumb and I'd like to fill it to restore its feel and protect the wood. How should I do it?

"Bump" ... it looks like it is a little depression rather than a chip. I did hear something about using an iron and brown paper .... any pro's tips for this?

If it's a dent you can put a damp cloth over it and heat it with an iron to raise it up. I wouldn't recommend it for a finished guitar though, because you'll have to raise it proud and then sand it down to level to get it flat again and that would require a substantial amount of work to refinish.

If the finish is actually damaged rather than just dented then you can use runny superglue to repair it. Build it up slowly and gradually and once it's dry give it a gentle rub with some fine wire wool and a polish. If the finish is not actually split or cracked then I would just leave it.
