Medium strings on an A201?

Postby Petrainy » 28 Apr 2005, 20:06

Can I leave medium strings on my A201? Most guitar sellers say not to put mediums on a cedar top, but my A201 sounds great with them on. Thanks. I have also had the tusq saddle replaced with bone, by the way, what a difference in the volume and sustain!

Hello Petrainy and welcome to the forums :D

We've never had any customer have a problem with using medium gauge strings on a cedar top, we use medium lights as standard because there are a good all-rounder size for anybody to play.

Bone saddles can sometimes make quite a noticable difference 8)

String gauges

I tried Martin custom lights on my 201A 11-52 and the 14/15th frets choked completely on the 2nd and 3rd strings. Funny thing is, I've been using these strings all along without a problem and I changed them recently only to find a choking guitar. Looking at the neck there is no evidence of anything wrong. I have taken it back to the retailer for a set up. Peter Morrison

FWIW, I've been using medium strings on my cedar-topped Lowden O10c for about 2 years now with no apparent problems.

Cheers,
