Nut Widths on Gold Series

Postby manonash » 31 Mar 2009, 18:56

Your table of specs shows the nut width for all current Avalon models as 44mm.

A vendor on eBay has been advertising Avalon Gold series dreadnaughts (discontinued models, no doubt) with a specifications table that shows the nut width as 43mm. I wrote them to ask about it and they replied as follows:

"We measured it with a digital caliper in the guitar shop, it was 45mm."

Can you give me the definitive word? Was it 43, 44, or 45mm? Did it change over time?

Many thanks!

Legacy and Gold models have a 44mm nut width, the Silver range had 43mm.

But remember ... all the Legacy and Gold necks are hand carved so occasionally a neck may vary by 0.2 - 0.5mm ... sometime a neck may need an extra few coats of lacquer, this can also add a very small amount to the width.

You also need to know how accurately the nut was measured, calipers or not. The width of the nut / neck should be measured were the ebony meets the bone nut.
