Songs for 12 String Guitar

Postby MIKE 450 » 20 Feb 2009, 20:24

Hi everyone! I was walking by a second hand shop in Belfast the other day and saw a Tanglewood 12 string being put in the front window.I've never owned a 12 String so I thought I'd go in and give it a try.

As I sat playing Hotel California I noticed a nice little B Band pre amp,it appeared to have a spruce top -mahogany back and sides. Insde the soundhole it read TW28/I2 CLN-C8. I must admit even with dirty old strings it sounded wonderful.

How much do you want for this I asked the young assistant,150 pounds she replied--so we agreed on 120 pound and of I went with my first 12 String. Taking my time I replaced the strings and sat down to play for a couple of minutes which turned into a couple of hours.

Why did I leave it so long to buy a 12 string I thought. I'm 51 years old now and to tell you the truth buying a 12 String had never crossed my mind."that's six guitar's you have now" my wife barked, but she did like the sound of it.

So time to inject some 12 String songs into my set, I've choose -Hotel California--Light My Fire--and Give A Little Bit--by Supertramp. I just can't think of many 12 STRING HITS so if anyone knows of any please let me know. I must add I put 10 gauge strings on which I think might be best, but playing 12 String is new to me so any tips about strings/best capo/ songs or anything else I should know would be welcome.

Six guitars? LOL
When I was 24 I went to a great guitar shop in Madrid (Spain) to buy a six string guitar, 14 frets until the soundboard and a narrow neck.
Once there, I don't know why, I played for some minutes an Ovation, 12 strings, 12 frets and the widest neck I'd ever seen.
It's in my house since then (25 years living with me) . The sound was so pretty that I bought it (by half of the real price, I have to say).
A 12 string guitar is something special. And interesting to keep it tuned :D

Songs? If you listen to Pete Seeger, you can find there hundreds of dongs played with 12 strings.

Yes Lentin, I must agree Pete Seeger is a genius infact go to youtube and watch Pete playing/singing-"What did you learn in school today" it's a fantastic old clip--check out the his old banjo.

Pete Seeger is one of those guys you must watch!

Over the hills and far away--nice one Kevin- LOL- I sense a little joke here--do you realy think a drunk filled bar on a friday night would recognise this tune--did Jimmy Page play a 12 string.

Should have gone to Cash Converters, Lisburn.... mine cost me £75 two weeks ago, in lovely condition. It's a Vintage by John Hornby: http://www.jhs.co.uk/vintageacoustic.html
The assistant claims to have sold an Avalon earlier in the year for peanuts (I think he told me £80), but I've no way of checking it this is true; the neck was apparrently warped to the point of being almost unplayable.
I last played a 12-string in the early 1980s, I like the rich tone from the double strings, but if you check out my other post in the Lutherie section you'll see I have plans for it.
