Apparently John Renbourn and Gordon Giltrap do!

On the subject of cost i thought a few people might comment on violin strings. They cost about £30 to £40 a set and are only half as long.

Vive la difference!

Postby drmar120 » 21 Dec 2008, 18:38

Obviously, strings are a very personal taste. And in my experience, what works for one guitar may not for another. For instance, on my two Larrivees I've tried a number of different strings, including Elixirs and EXPs. But what works best with those sitka tops and mahogany bodies are the Martin SP phosphor bronze lights. They sound dark and characterful to start with and age gracefully for up to a couple of months before they die; but I'm not a heavy player. But on my A201 any Martin strings I've tried so far sound dull and dead. The best strings I've found for the Avalon (which I've had for a year) are the EXP 80/20 custom lights; brings out the instrument's brightness and clarity. It may have to do with the gauge of the strings. Anyway, re. strings, vive la difference!

I think Crofty was referring to the question 'does anybody use Rotosounds?'.

Indeed I was Ross,I suscribe to Acoustic Guitar magazine and it carries ads for Rotosound,John and Gordon are 2 of the many guitarists who endorse Rotosound strings.
But to get back to John's remark,I have used Newtones on various guitars and they are good strings.
I like the Heritage low tension but not in the lighter gauges,I am using 12/51 and they are fine.
But as drmar120 said different strings suit different guitars and I think Avalon have made a good choice supplying EXPs on their guitars.I guess you have got to experiment a bit.

I needed those stenkin' Martin SPs off the Maton in a real rush at the start of the week there as I was playing at a funeral on Tuesday, and with nothing in the house but a set of AER acoustic strings that came with my AER amp when I bought it months ago, I took a chance and put them on. Now these are very nice strings, I was really impressed by them! I can't see them lasting as long as Elixirs but they're head and shoulders above the Martins in my opinion. Another smiley face sticker for AER's workbook. :D

AER

Postby MIKE 450 » 03 Jan 2009, 01:48

Sean I checked out the AER strings, and guess what! They are those stinkin Martin SPs only they changed the name to AER -AND added another 20 quid-yes yes yes! 28 smackeroo's--Adhamh will have to sell he's house for a packet.

Smelling a RAT I typed in AER, and like a window cleaner peeping though the window-- I saw Tommy Emannuel having dinner with guess who--MR AER and SP MARTIN -and a whole host of other string guys- they where plotting to take over the world.

Mr AER was a tall strong looking man, he spoke with a thick German accent," think GOLDFINGER"

While pointing to a screen which showed lots of different makes of strings.
He shouted "Gentlemen my plan is to not only sell only condom strings at £11-00 but with the help of Mr Emannuel and other fast picker's- I want to sell a packet of strings for FIVE HUNDREAD AND NINETY NINE POUNDS.

"I almost fell of my ladder" He went on to say he's plan would be -to send TE on a world tour with he's AER 60 watt amp. He said that guitarist where stupid PLUCKERS and would think that the sound Mr EMANNUEL was getting from he's tiny guitar and amp, was the real Macoy. He assured them that guitarist's rarely look at the massive PA system.

He went on to shout"WITH EVERY AMP I WILL GIVE A PACKET OF STRINGS AT THE PRICE OF 599-00 SMACKEROOS".

TO BE CONTINUED!

 Haha no problem Mike! The whole string thing just boils down to what sounds good to you as the player, just happened to really like the AER strings. And yeah, what an amp too!

As for me in the Waterfront...you may be waiting a long, long time for that one :P

Although it's not acoustic, a good mate of mine swears by Rotosounds as an electric bassist. He actually can't wait until the strings dull down, he loves that groove they get into after the brightness wears off!

strings

Postby MIKE 450 » 20 Jan 2009, 14:19

I tried the Rotosound country Golds Sean-- I was shocked to pull the strings out of there packet and find they where bald YES BALDIE! --I laughed my head off--the EADG strings which should be wound all the way up to the ball end were'nt.

They where wound except for the last three inches--so when you put the ball end of the string into the bridge pin hole and pushed in your bridge pin= instead of having a 52 gauge string sitting on the bridge- we now have a 12 guage bladie peice of wire which buzzed like hell in the 52 groove.

So from condom strings to bareback strings in the space of a few weeks HA HA LOL
STILL apart from the buzz they sounded as good as the Elixirs and they only cost a fiver--

For my next choice of string I'm going to try ADAMAS--I used to use these strings 25 years ago and they where great--they don't sell them in the music shops anymore- they where made in Sweden i THINK! but I believe Fender has bought them over--Don't start me on fender strings.

Have you tried Newtone strings? How about John Pearse? I've had good results from both of those. Much better than Elixirs (for my playing).
