Light gauge or medium??

Postby derek2400 » 30 Sep 2008, 14:51

Hi there,
Since there is not a Lowden forum , maybe you folks can help me. What string gauge responds better on these guitars? I have a Lowden O10. I have mediums on there now and noticed that, when tuned to standard tuning, the belly is starting to bulge a bit. I play in various altered tunings and worry that lights gauge won`t hold up to the constant twisting of the pegs! Heheh! Hope you can help.....Derek

Thanx for the link to the Lowden site. I plan to stick around this one as well. Newtone strings are very hard to come by in Nova Scotia (where I live). The closest place to get them is Toronto. Do you play in altered tunings as well? Has anyone on here had similar problems with bridge bellying due to mediums? I know they use lights at the factory. I am assuming it`s because they`re easier on the neck/top for shipping etc. I LOVE my guitar and want to get the most out of it soundwise.

I had a problem with the tension of my strings causing the belly of my guitar to bulge out, but the guitar was a Martin. I changed to lights and it eventually went back to being flat.

I would imagine that it is the humidity. The Martin I had had come over from the USA and the change in environment will definitely have affected the guitar.

Thanx a million folks! I will look into that for sure. I had planned on getting some sort of de-humidifier in the past. Thanx again for your input.

I just put light guage on my guitar. I can`t beleive the difference!! I was never one to use lights. I have ALWAYS used mediums. I am convinced 100% that this guitar should have light guage on it. It is louder, more responsive, and quite easier on the fingers I might add! I guess maybe the top was working harder with the mediums. I advise anyone who is experiencing tone issues with their Lowden to give lights a try. I can`t believe I was so ignorant! Thanks for all the help gang. i`m sure I will be asking more questions in the future! Heheh! Cheers...
