Did Mississippi John Hurt use Avalon guitar?

Postby Lentin » 06 Aug 2008, 23:04

Surfing through internet, I've found this page.
It's part of Tom Paxton web. (I love Tom Paxton. Well, I love most of that generation of folk singers like Pete Seeger, Paxton, Peter Paul & Mary and many many more).
Probably that means I'm a bit old already...
This is the url:
http://www.tompaxton.com/back_in_the_day.html

And this verse is part of the song dedicated yo Mississippi John Hurt by Tom Paxton:

"He tickled our fancies
With his Avalon. "

Could it be?

Peace

Something tells me he's talking about 'Avalon Blues', which is one of MJH's most popular pieces. He's also from Avalon, Mississippi.

Don't think Avalon Guitars were around in the 1920s. :)

I concur with Ross - this is a reference to MJH's 'Avalon Blues' which features the line, "Avalon my home town always on my mind" - you can hear the 1928 recording by following this link:

Strange as it may sound, I've been there! Our dear friend Roby Duke who passed away last December is buried near Avalon, MS - as a kid, he used to sit and watch Mississippi John Hurt sing and play on the porch of the general store in Avalon. After Roby was laid to rest, I found the old (now dilapidated) Valley Store in Avalon - it is a small and very rural community about 12 miles NE of Greenwood.

Maybe we can change the lyric to "Avalon my gee-tar, always on my mind"!
