Third string from another planet... or problems in the L32?

Postby Lentin » 25 Apr 2008, 22:25

Something I'd never seen before.
Six strings. Normal. Used. Normal. I don't remember when I changed them. Normal on me. I don't even remember which brand. Not normal, but probably this set was changed by the luthier when I took my L32 to be adjusted.
Perhaps NewTone MasterClass, 0.11 - 0.50.

While the other five strings look normal, if you slide your finger along the third string, you will realize that the bronze coverage is broken on each and every fret.

If you look carefully you can even see it the 'holes'.

 :?:

Could it be the saddle put in the wrong direction?
(right to the left, not up to down)

How would that affect it?

I would say a defective string is the culprit.

the only other thing would be a problem with the frets and that is unlikely. Look for the obvious reasona dnthat would be a defective string. Change it and if it happens again, then that rules out the string.

Hi Lentin

Not quite sure what you mean, but it sounds like a problem i had with Newtone strings. The G or 3rd string the bronze windings had broken where they had came into cintact with the frets, not every single fret just about the first 6 or 7 were affected,I put it down to a tune that I played alot on the G string with lots of hammer ons.
Don,t know if this is the same as your problem, but a increase in strings grade cured it,say from 0.11 - 0.50 to 0.12-0.54.
