Hi

I am probably going to start a debate but what strings do recommend on these guitars ?

D'Addario EXP 16's are what we put on as standard, good bright tone and decent lifespan.

Also like Elixir Nanowebs too :)

I'd go along with that, and D’Addario Silk & Steel Folk guitar strings. I also like Thomastik plectrum Series, although they are better for strumming than picking. :)

I'm a big fan of the D'Addario EXPs too, but I will use the Elixirs if I can't get hold of them. I usually changed quarterly to keep the bright feel to them. And I use a Jim Dunlop 0.6mm plectrum which is forgiving enough for strumming and just hard enough to pick with. :)

The uncoated D'Addarios for me. I like a fresh set of strings, they are cheaper so you can change them more often, and each time I put them on it feels like I have a new guitar. Also, the coating peels off after a week or two so I want to change them anyway. They are also very reliable.

Thanks all,

I will get searching. I remember about 15 years ago when it was Lowden the company used to package their own strings, I assume that has stopped.

Missed this thread...

I use rotosounds on all my guitars. Back in the day I used D'Addarios on my electric guitar and the problems I had with tuning were just unbelievable! It was literally tune up, play the first verse and the guitar was noticeably out of tune, and that is no joke when you're using a floyd rose trem! Straw poll: has anyone else ever had this kind of problem?

Elixirs have changed my life!!! I have to be honest...nothing compares. And you're Avalon guitar only deserves the best. I only started using them in December, and they just make my guitars sound like a million bucks. I'm not sure whether I like Polyweb or Nanoweb better though. Does anyone have a preference, and why?

Elixirs are too smooth. You can't grab hold of them and get really stuck in. Plus you put on a set, get rid of the box, and then you don't know which ones they were - Nanoweb? Polyweb? Phosphor Bronze? They sound pretty good, but I don't think as nice as the D'addarios.

I'm with John on the Newtones. I sometimes play them while wearing a bow-tie but that's too much information.

I never wear a bow-tie. But I did wear a tie to church on Christmas. Oh, and on the occasion of my son's wedding earlier this month.

I suppose I should mention that Elixers have been very, very good to me. I can pretty hard on strings, but they're up to the challenge.

Another vote for Newtones, in particular Masterclass PB (I use mostly 12-54, sometimes 13-56) - great tone, feel and string life - remarkably cheap in UK. Can't vouch for them on Avalons sadly, but my Lowdens and Fyldes love them.
Bye now

Back on D'Addario EXP after I found the Newtone Heritage wearing very quickly on the Avalon.
I found the windings (particularly on the G string) would wear through where they came in contact with the fret, only seemed to be lasting about 2 weeks and then whe winding would have worn through and the string was dull.
Maybe my style was too agressive for the Heritage low tension.
Anyway went back to EXPs after my Legacy was given a service at the Factory last year, the strings the lads put on lasted for about 4/5 months and still had a great tone,so back to EXPs for me.
