A200CE...slight buzz on every fret. Any advice or insight?

Postby ChargerBill » 17 Jan 2005, 22:52

This may be normal for the Avalons but it's not normal compared to other guitars I've played. What happens is at the transition between completely fingering a fret and lifting off - at the point where the string is BARELY contacting the fret - there is a slight audible buzz...on nearly every fret. My Ibanez doesn't do this and neither does the Taylor I've been borrowing. I looked closely at the frets and I noticed that on the Avalon they all seem to have more surface area (almost looks flattened at the peak) that makes contact with the strings, which also means that more of the string needs to disengage from the fret, and more surface area would also mean a split second longer for the string to disengage. The frets on both my Ibanez and the Taylor are ROUNDED at the peak and the engaging and disenging seems instantaneuos. I have even exaggerated this fretting action and slowly released pressure on the strings from all guitars. What I noticed is that the Avalons buzzing becomes even more pronounced while I can barely get the Ibanez or Taylor to buzz at all when doing the same thing.

My questions are: Is this normal? Do the frets come dressed from the factory? Can anything be done about this? Would Elixir Polywebs help?

I absolutely love the sound of this guitar, and it records great plugged directly into my Mac, and sounds great going through both may amps...I just am having a hard time accepting this buzz. No, it's not a HIGH FRET annoying-as-heck type buzz, it's more of a very small sounding but very frequent irritating little buzz. I just don't understand what is happening... This calliber of guitar should have no sound anomalies at all.

Tech guys, please help...

The problem with the buzzing could actually be the frets not being perfectly rounded. Which is strange as with all the Avalons I've seen, the fret jobs have been perfect! Has your dealer been doing some "fixins" with your guitar?

I would suggest that you take it to a good repairman, so you can get a second opinion. I have actually seen this problem you describe with some Taylors.

Also, is the action too low? Is your truss rod adjusted correctly?
