I always thought that redwood was sort of between cedar and spruce in terms of tone for soundboards but I've recently heard a few conflicting opinions, like redwood is even fatter than cedar.
Can anyone who is in the know give a description of the sound of a redwood topped acoustic in comparison to spruce and cedar guitars of the same shape?
yes, redwood does give a "fatter" sound than cedar and makes for a guitar with a strong mid range response, trebles can be softer, sometimes muted but not in a bad way.
We had quite a few jazz style players opt for the redwood, wanting that well rounded mid range and thudding bass.
