Fret worn down from pushing strings down too hard...

Postby hogwired » 17 Aug 2006, 23:49

I have an Avalon AS201CE (Silver Series) and the third fret is worn down by the high E string from pushing the strings down too hard (I guess I don't know my own strength)...I took it back to the dealer where the guitar was purchased (they always service all of my guitars) and they said that they have adjusted the truss rod as much as they can to get any buzzes out and due to the worn fret, that I would have to replace the frets. They suggested that I put in stainless steel frets since I play so hard. They don't do the work there, but they gave me the name of a local professional who can do the job for about $200.

My question is three-fold. First, is it recommended to put stainless steel frets on my guitar? Second, will it void my warranty if I do this? Lastly, is this a common problem; I haven't seen any other posts about it?

Thanks,
Jeremy

You must have a tire-fitters grip

It's not normal to wear down frets quickly but I suppose it's all relative to playing styles.

Stainless Steel frets are great and will "probably" never wear out ... a good choice.

If the guitar is older than 1 year then the warranty isn't an issue. The lifetime warranty is only for the hand-made Irish guitars we make.
