Just re-read what I wrote and realised I omitted one part of the tongue in cheek advice, doh!! Play as a lap steel , but most importantly, play left-handed Hendrix style. Else try a bit of Preston Reed percussive style with your left hand.
I hate to think what it must be like not to be able to play, but at least it'll only be temporary. If it's any consolation, here are a couple of true stories about two bass playing friends of mine.
First one concerns a guy who was born with a birth defect, ie he only had two fingers on his left-hand, or more properly a thumb and a thick finger, which appeared like 2-3 fingers fused together. Desperate to play guitar or bass, he learned to play left handed and use his "hand" to strike the strings in a semi-slapbass way. Lucky he loved the Red Hot Chili Peppers really, but I also played with im in a more traditional metal band playing ACDC, Black Sabbath etc.
Second one concerns the bass player of the last band I played in. One day, he was cutting some wood with a bandsaw from which the guard had been removed. The wood stuck, jumped and his left-thumb was cut/torn off to the point it couldn't be resewn back on. His wife sewed him a leather cover for the 3/4" stump which remained and despite the pain and internal bleeding, he was back practising within a fortnight and gigging a few months later.
Both stories illustrate how determination can get you through anything, so keep smiling.
