Getting hold of wood

Postby martinedwards » 09 Jan 2006, 16:59

Hi there, I'm looking for a piece of ebony for a fretless bass fingerboard. While a freebie would be great,I realise that things like that don't happen.

Next best would be a major guitar manufacturer who would be willing to sell me a bit at a reasonable price rather than having to buy a piece from the US and pay huge shipping costs........

Other than that, a pointer to the right online (or even better, Northern Ireland) stockist would be great!!

Thanks in advance!!

pics... right then, the neck is a mahogany ash laminate (the mahogany salvaged from a 40 yearold science bench!!) the wings of the body are sycamore (I think.... found it in the store!!!)

Hi Martin

Here's a couple of suppliers in UK that should have ebony long enough for your project

http://www.luthierssupplies.co.uk

http://www.craft-supplies.co.uk

I've used both in the past and have been very reliable and quick.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the links, I'll have a look.

Someone on a bass forum suggested melemine sheet over ash!!

Sounds weird but strangely feasable....

It'll probably look a little radical on an otherwise woody bass though...
