Machine heads on as 201

Postby Sillywizard » 22 Jul 2007, 15:09

Hi, I have had my guitar (an Avalon as 201) for a couple of years now and love it!! I only have one slight niggle, I'm not very fond of the heads. They just seem to have to be turned for too many rotations for my liking.. and a real pain when changing strings. Was just wondering if anybody knows the hole size for this model and what heads are used on Martin D18's?

As I say, only a slight niggle, other than that, great guitar :D

Thanks

Usually people would consider tuners that you have to turn a lot as a good thing because it's easier to get the guitar smack in tune than if a small turn on the tuner moves the string a lot. It is a drag when you're stringing a guitar or if you go between tunings a lot but I don't find my A200 to be that much of a problem when the strings just need regular tuning.

The answer to you question is I think that tuner holes are a standard size now so you can buy any tuner and it should fit. One thing to bear in mind is you'll need to get tuners that are the same size or bigger so that the new tuner covers the mark left by the old tuner. it's also worth finding tuners that have the same angle of retaining screw that screws into the back of the head. That will save you drilling new holes. :)

I see where you coming from but I have grown up with my dads guitar (the D18 mentioned  ) and just prefer those heads... plus my guitar keeps its tuning very well! Thanks for the advice
