Truss rod on A320C

Postby biglouis » 04 Apr 2006, 20:55

Jim, remember me? The 320C is opening up beyootifully and I'm really pleased with it.

However, tonight, it definitely started to buzz a little and I think I need to get my favourite guitar tech to give it the once over.

There appears to be a slight dip in the height of the fret just about where it is buzzing. In other words the frets before and after appear higher than the point where there is a slight buzz.

Where in heck is the access to the truss rod? I've looked inside but I just can't see it. Is it really so close to the soundboard that it is occluded from sight by the top brace?

Is there any other reason for the uneveness of the fret heights (of course it could be my eyesight!)?

TIA for your advice

Hi Louis

The truss rod nut is located behind the main cross strut and is best adjusted with a 5mm hex-ball driver or short neck 5mm allen key.

It's tough for me to make a definite comment on the frets without seeing the guitar, I know that all guitars get a rigorous final set-up and check before they leave the factory to make sure everything is as it should be but of course there's always a chance of something moving at a later date.

The most common cause for frets to move is when a fingerboard has been affected by overly dry or humid conditions. The ebony fingerboard is oiled but not lacquered so it is exposed to the relative "weather" conditions.
The last 2 months or so have been very dry, typical for UK Winter-time and it is possible that the fingerboard has dried ever so slightly, small but enough to cause a fret or 2 to move.

I do advise you let your local guitar pro have a look at it for a hands on opinion and please let me know his thoughts.

Frets can be gentle tapped back into place easily enough. :)
Cheers
Jim
