Reaming end pin hole for strapjack

Postby biglouis » 11 Jan 2006, 22:47

When I bought my Avalon I was advised that although the end pin hole was approximately the right width for a standard strapjack I might need to expand it slightly.

I'm trying to fit the strapjack assembly that comes with a L R Baggs M1 Active and sure enough, although it is wide enough on the outside, inside it is a tad too narrow.

I can't believe it is not easy enough for me to widen out the internal side slightly. Can someone recommend what tool I would need, and if my hand drill would be sufficient? What steps should I take to ensure that I don't damage the external finish? Should I be too concerned about the internal finish?

TIA for answers

Hi Louis

A shallow angle hand reamer is the easiest option with only a few turns needed to widen the inner diameter but a common steel drill bit of the correct size can be used as well and with a bit of care and attention you should find it a fairly straight forward job.

I find using a slow speed drill the best because only a few turns are needed.

Take it slow and easy and you should have nothing to worry about but if concerned you could put some low-tack masking tape over the strap-button inlay for a bit of extra protection against light scrapes etc.

Hope this helps
