Hey,
You lot have been very quiet lately! Hopefully I can stimulate a bit of discussion from y'all.
I have recently (last Wednesday) acquired an Avalon Legacy A25CE (Cedar/Rosewood) and I am loving it! The tone is out of this world. Just roll your thumb down an E chord and listen to it ring! I am waiting for a new Fishman Ellipse Blender system to arrive from the US and in the meantime I just have the under-saddle pickup. Anyone out there got views on the Ellipse? It means no holes in the side of your beloved guitar which has to be a good thing. Plus the mic sits on an adjustable gooseneck right behind the strings under the soundhole.
I used the guitar in our church worship band (well, me, a pianist and a drummer) yesterday for the first time and I struggled with the sheer volume of the guitar (quite a bit of feedback) and it's strong bass notes. I use a Roland AC-60 amp and go from it into a DI box to the sound-desk. Can I have some advice from you guys who have more experience in these matters?
Any insight into how I can overcome the feedback problem? I have to be reasonably close to the amp to make adjustments to volume and EQ.
Also does anyone want to suggest some EQ settings to get the best out of this combination?
I also used the guitar on Friday night to lead worship in our house fellowship and it was amazing. When you're on a stool with an Avalon playing and singing everything is dandy. As soon as you go into church and plug in to other things then the problems start. How can I best reproduce the awesome unplugged tone of this guitar when plugged?
I have seen varying views on the forum regarding action. I feel it's a bit high (the [wonderful] guys in the factory have already told me that they'll make any set-up adjustments that I want whenever I go back for the Ellipse). The action on my Takamine was very low (too low) and that's probably why I'm struggling a bit when I venture past the fifth fret. I don't strum that hard so I'm wondering could I have the action lowered a bit to get a compromise between comfortable fingerpicking and buzz-free light strumming?
Any advice or insight into these issues would be much appreciated. We have a large conference at our church this weekend and I don't want to have to worry about all this during the worship.
Thanks guys,
David
