Hi Spamrock.
I have been playing acoustic guitars for more years than I care to remember. Over time, I have come to appreciate the different properties of the various tonewoods used in guitar building, but,......... it took me a long time to be able to identify these various woods simply by looking, and still I'm not always right!
Luthiery is a skill I am totally in awe of, and I am proud to own two Avalons that give me as much pleasure in admiring the beauty of the woods and the craftsmanship of the build, as they do in playing.
The point is, wood is a beautiful and varied material: soft/hard, dark/light, open/closed grain etc., each feature having an effect on the look and sound of the instrument. Over time, you will be able to identify most woods used in luthiery, it's an interesting subject, and it's great being a wood anorak!

Cheers............Brian
