Strings-coated or uncoated?

Postby tcamp22 » 22 Aug 2008, 10:28

Another thread about strings. I've been playing an Avalon D32 for a few months now. It came with EXP strings, which are coated. At first, I liked them as they were smooth and seemed to play a bit easier. So, I continued to use them on the Avalon, and also strung another guitar with them.

Recently, I put on a set of uncoated Martin's .12-.54's and found them a bit more responsive. Better bite for hammer ons/pull offs and such. I also found that the coating seems to wear off the EXP's and they get feeling a bit skanky and dont seem to last, with wear marks on the wound strings over the sound hole. I play a couple hours a day, both fingerstyle and strumming.

Anyway, just wondering what others thought. I know its a personal preference.

Hi tc
I use EXP's on my A200ce (12's) and my new A32ce-12string (10's) and I have never had a problem with the coating disintegrating.
I have liked these strings from the moment I tried them and so I have not compared them with any others recently and I do tend to stick with preferred options. I did try Elixer once, but found them far to "bright".
Even though they are coated, I do wipe my strings after each session/performance and occassionly clean them with "Fast Fret" (am I allowed to mention brands :) ).
Yup, EXP's for me every time!

Cheers.............Brian

You don't get the same tone from coated strings as you would from a set of good uncoated bronze strings. The only problem is that bronze strings can 'die' quite quickly. Coated strings (IMO) are a compromise - you lose the tone, but gain longer string life.

strings coated

For me the hassle lies with string tension some makes seem very heavy and other's light, try them all I say! There's no bad strings there's just some better than other's, find the one's that suit you.

I only use uncoated and change as needed. I want the best tone possible without compromise.

I have been using D'Addario phosphor/ bronze lights and love them
