I have often wondered what people feel is the ideal Avalon guitar for strumming and the ideal guitar for playing finger style? And more significantly what is it that makes them suit different styles?

I generally agree with John (although I think he means mm, not cm ;) )

Perhaps the greatest fingerstylist of them all, Eric Roche, used a jumbo, so it's whatever suits you best. :)

I had that one!

Are there any woods which respond better to strumming?

again, it's all a matter of taste. Spruce is very tight and bright, whereas cedar is warm and fat, and can get a bit bogged down if you aren't careful. Spruce is the traditional strummers wood, I think.
