Hum in eclipse p/u on gold, case??

Postby jcstrings » 06 Mar 2008, 07:50

Hi, i just got one of the last of the Gold A 201CE, and plugged it in, it hums a lot, and when you adjust the eclipse p/u slider to the mic side it has very little input / sound from the mic.
What can i do about this?
Also , i got it new, and it came in a TDK case, but i was expecting an Avalon case? (like the gig bag for my silver?)
ALSO, if i got it new, who do i go for warranty / repair if there is a problem?
I got it new on ebay.
And what it s the deal with Avalon not being available in the USA?
I think they are great, and have a silver as well.
Thanks

Hi JC, we don't ship new guitars in TDK cases ... ? all Legacy and Gold made in Ireland are sent out in Hiscox but since you mention it was an ebay sale things may not be as straight forward.

If advertised as new on ebay and sold from a proper dealer then you do have some comeback with them, if you bought it from a private seller "as new" .... well that's a different story.

It could be something as simple as a bad earth connection on the jack socket and a guitar tech could quickly remedy that.

edit : does your guitar have an abalone rosette and a serial number starting with "22" ?

Same with mine. I think the Ellipse blend is set at the factory so that there is more input from the UST than from the mic (presumably to avoid feedback).
On my model, there is a small mic trim control that allows you to adjust the level of the mic in relation to the pick-up. That way, you can have more mic when the slider is in the middle, and you'll have more sound from the mic when you slide it to the mic side.

Hi, it is an 'Ellipse' p/u, and SKB case (oops), and the serial # is 22 149.
Its supposed to have been made in the Czech republic?
Also, anyone got any info on Avalon distribution here in the USA
thanks

Hi JC - good to have you involved on the forum! You indeed do have a Czech made Avalon Gold and the SKB case was the choice of case our former US distributor chose to use with the Gold series in the US, so you have a legitimate combination of guitars and case. Irish made Gold series guitars ship with a Hiscox case.

We are in the midst of plans for our US distribution but just not quite ready to finalise things just yet. However, we have good support for Avalon with one of our directors based in Nashville and right where you are (Seattle) one of the best guitar techs in the US does great work and knows Avalon really well. His name is Mark Arnquist and his email is: arnquist@comcast.net

Drop him a line if you need someone to look at that pickup - sounds like a simple fix.

Hi, thanks for the info. Also, my silver came with warranty paper work, but the gold did not, do i need to worry about this?
I think Avalons are very nice, and just not well known enough here in the USA.
Keep us posted about whats up with US distribution.
Thanks
Oh, would the hum repair/fix be covered under my warranty, and is Anquist an Avalon repair person??
thanks

Yes, Mark Arnquist has our full approval to do warranty work on Avalon's.

Your Gold should have come with a warranty card; however, if you send an email to info@avalonguitars.com with the model & serial number and your contact details, your warranty will be registered.

The guitar is warrantied for life (to the original owner); electronics are warrantied for one year from date of purchase.

Hi, again.
That is really good news. I will also contact the store i bought it from and see if they can send me the warranty papers.
Thanks so much.
