First avalon

Postby steve » 29 Sep 2004, 09:21

I am about to order my first avalon, the A320, to replace my damaged Rod Button handbuilt guitar.

Any one got an A320? If so, your views/comments appreciated. I have only been able to actually see/play an A32 so I would be interested to know how much difference there is.

Steve, the A320 and A32 share the same body style and tonewood combination. There are three main differences however and these are the same differences for all Avalon Legacy Premier range models and Avalon Legacy Standard range models. The Premier series guitars (the A320 in this case) are built with additional purflings and bindings. The second main difference is the selection of tonewoods; we select the highest grade tonewoods for the Premier guitars. Thirdly, the Premier series guitars have a 5-piece neck.
The Standard models (such as the A32) will not have purfling detail edging on the back and sides (only the soundboard); it will not have a bound fingerboard and the neck style is a 2-piece configuration. The build quality for both is identical however as is the standard of finishing. Tonally, they have the same character although the Premier model, because of the selection of the higher grade tonewood, will sound marginally better.
Hope this helps

Many thanks for that information. I will be ordering it from Sound Control in Bristol next week. I also intend getting the custom option of the celtic inlay on the headstock to personalise it a little.

I generally used Daddario light gauge strings. Any idea what the guitar will be shipped with as standard?

All Irish made Avalon guitars are equipped with D'Adarrio medium light strings - EXP's. Sound Control should be easily able to put a set of lights on the guitar and if need be, adjust the set up accordingly - this is not always needed and is a minor tweak if required at all.

Many thanks guys, medium light are what I normally use. I look forward to ordering the guitar this week. Avalon tell me that I should get the guitar by xmas seeing as I only want one custom option of the celtic inlay. The only picture I have seen of this inlay is on the guitar on the web-site, so if there are any additional colour pictures, just for interest, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for all of the useful information so far.

Well, I have just been in to Bristol and placed the order for my A320. Options of Celtic Inlay and 2 dots on the 12th Fret. I will just have to be patient now and wait until it arrives.
