Red Cedar tops????

Postby play2praiseHim » 11 Dec 2004, 22:55

Hi. is the red cedar the same as redwood? I know that some dealers say redwood on the Avalons some say red cedar. If different, is redwood offered as a custom option? How does red cedar handle medium strumming?

good day play2praisehim, welcome to the forums :)

The 2 are completely different woods. Western Red cedar is one of our standard option woods on models that have the *25 or *10 designation ie: L25 or L10.

The Redwood top is a custom option and on the label of a guitar with this wood, it should say something like *L25 Redwood* to signify the different wood.

There is a possibility that the odd redwood custom model slipped through the net and got labelled without the "Redwood" .... it can happen, thankfully not to often

Red Cedar is great for any type of playing, fingerstyle or strumming, the body size / style will probably have more bearing on strumming than the wood.

A medium to large size soundbox will give better clarity and definition to strummed chords.

hope this helps

JB, And what are the characteristics of redwood? What I mean is how does it compare to red cedar? Will it do everything that redcedar will? I might choose this wood as a custom option if....... How much of an upcharge is it? If it goes against forum policy to talk about price, please feel free to email me at lalalalala30@hotmail.com I am looking at 2 different guitars. 1 dealer has an l-25 custom redwood top and the other has a l-25 with red cedar top. The red cedar topped is considerable less expensive. So if it is the redwood that might suit my playing style of light to medium strumming 50% /fingerstlye 50% better then I want to try to talk the dealer with the redwood down. But I need to know what each guitar has as it's list price. Then I can bargain and ge tthe best guitar for me!!! Thanks!!!

A redwood top has the character of western red cedar but sounds slightly sharper / crisper.

The upcharge as a custom extra would be £160 sterling.
