Still confused after reading FAQ on where Avalon Golds built

Postby p90Paul » 25 Sep 2006, 16:16

Hi there,
I have read the FAQ regarding where Avalons are built. I know the "where built" issue does concern lots of people. I had to get the supplying dealer to make a few calls to confirm mine was a NI built guitar but now I'm not so sure.

I have an A200 Gold serial no A007** bought new in March 2004. According to the FAQ the serial number indicates this is a Newtownards built guitar. However the FAQ also indicates 99% of NI built guitars have a woooden rosette. Mines abalone and I don't think its a custom ! unless the fact it hasn't any fret position markers makes it a custom ? Can anyone comment on this ?
I wouldn't pay a grand for a Korean or Czech built guitar irrespective of its quality and I picked the Avalon Gold thinking I was supporting UK luthiers. I would imagine initial sales and resale value of all Avalons is consequently affected by this issue. I think a previous post raised the issue of Avalon supplying some sort of "proof"of the NI heritage which Im sure would be a boost to the sale of new Avalons and a comfort to existing owners. Any comments ?

Is the label model and serial number hand written ?

We have made a few "Golds" with Abalone rosetted soundboards.
But the biggest signal is the Label ... a serial number like A00765 is from us here in Northern Ireland.

Send be good close up photos if you're still not sure

Thank you for the reply its really appreciated. Yes, the model type A200 and the serial number A007** is indeed very neatly hand written on the label (also machine inked below the allen keyed bolts) If this is proof that its a NI/UK built Avalon then I'm happy but wouldn't it be so much easier to have the place of manufacture on the label in the first place ?

I have no intention of selling since I discovered the joy of open D tuning on this particular guitar but I do think it may ultimately affect the resale values of all Avalons if its so difficult to discover where they were made and as a consequence, the original retail price. Still, a great guitar and an informative site, keep up the good work !!!!!!!!

Good point, well made. I think Avalon are putting the specific place of manufacture on the label now. Mine says made in Avalon...
