Made In China????

Postby wallybanger » 23 Sep 2006, 17:45

I Was in my Local guitar shop about 3 weeks ago and was introduced to Avalon guitars. I was pretty impressed with the one I was playing, Nice sound, nice action, I think I was a D-101 or something similar (Cedar Top, mahogany Sides). It was selling for $1000CDN.

I went back in yesterday with a friend and thats when it happend. The Salesperson mentioned the term "Off Shore". I Looked through the sound hole and thats when I saw it... "MADE IN CHINA". I Think I threw up a little in my mouth.

What I'm getting to is after a shock like that what can be said about Chinese Avalons to perhaps sway me into buying one? I Don't want to be conned, I'd just like to know the facts. I really don't like stuff that's made in China but if the quality is there......

Could a Chinese guitar really be worth $1000? How are they built? What is the quality control like? Why China of all places? After looking around on the net and the Avalon site I've seen no mention of China... Ireland, Chech Republic, Korea but now china.

Anyway, I'd just like some feedback and information. $1000 is alot to drop when you're not sure.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike, .... this sounds mighty strange as we've never had any Avalons made in China. ?

I would really like to see that label and serial number !

Sounds very fishy.

Chinese are not able to build a guitar like Avalon

Postby markinbfa » 24 Sep 2006, 16:40

Hi Wallybanger, I am a Chinese and I would say Chiese are not able to build a guitar like Avalon. That is also the reason why we Chinese professional guitarists order guitar from western countries, such as the US or the UK etc. Check it out! I think JB can help u. Looking forward to see the result.

Well That's interesting. Do you work for Avalon or anything? Do Employees ever post on this board?

Well, as I said, I was really put off by the Made in China on the label. I'll see if I can get a picture next time I'm down town.

markinbfa, Thanks for the input. Hopefully I can get to the bottom of this.

Cheers,
Wally

OK, I'm a jackass  I was looking in an Alverez when I saw "Made in China". I Feel like such a tool. It was on the wall mixed in with the Avalons. Also it didn't help that the women that worked there didn't know what she was talking about. When I asked, almost in disgust "it's made in China?" she just shook her head yes  (we were obviously already on the topic of Avalons). I Discovered my error when I went back in to take pictures and get a serial number as Jim suggested.

I went back in and talked with the owner. After much humming and hawing I ended up getting a Silver Series DS-200. I've gotta say, I'm quite happy with the sound and I've been playing it alot since I got it.

Jim, any extra into you could offer me about the guitar would be muchly appreciated.

I ended up paying about $850CDN for it. Is that a good price? What did some of you other guys pay for your silver series avalons?

Cheers,
Mike

*crawls out of the woodwork*

my name is Sam and I am addicted to my DS200...

Yup, I have one. I paid £400 second hand a year ago ($790), although the Avalon Silver series have come down in price from being around £450-£600 ($990CAD-$1200CAD)

Looks like you got a good deal there. :)

I got my DS201 for $500 Canadian just after Christmas last year. It was brand new but the store was going out of business. They had everything marked half price. They had the DS200 for the same price as well. I was still sceptical of the price so I called every dealer in the country. The cheapest I found the same model was around $750 not on sale. So I knew it wasn't as good a deal as the shop made it sound (half price) but it was still a steal in my opinion.

Sounds like a great deal, Pony Boy.

In that kind of circumstance, you have to realize that the store you're talking about probably cut their profits to virtually nothing. That's quite a blessing to have found...

Hope you're loving it just as much as you did on the first strum. :D
