Hello from newbie

Postby gstring » 09 Aug 2006, 22:36

Hi all

Just a quick post to say hello from this newbie. I am an electric player of 35 years but I am now making the transition to acoustics for the first time.

I have recently aquired a A32 and more recently a S10C and I am slowly getting used to the higher action etc. I initially lowered the action to a point where it felt like my old strat to play but unfortunately the tone and volume went out with the saddle shavings, especially noticable on the S10C

So I had a chat with Jim who informed me about break angles and how critical they are to tone and volume. Anyway, I have just fitted higher saddles which Jim supplied at short notice ( thanks Jim ) and bingo tone is back!

... and from another newbie, welcome. I've been lurking, but someone else coming out as a S10c owner has brought me out of cover.

I got mine recently, and it's a bit non-standard, having a Queensland Maple body and a 48mm neck. I've never heard a mahogany bodied one, so don't know how much the sound changes, but I suspect not a lot as I've herad QMs sound described as mahogany like.

The 48mm is nice for shovel shaped fingers, and what could be most kindly described as developing technique.

The most noticeable effect of the guitar is the smiley faces it induces in serious fingerpicking acquaintances ( and of course a reluctance to give it back)

I was wrestling with a dreadnought before this, and it is just oh so much more comfortable to play - and frankly it produces all the volume, and range, and tone, and sustain etc I would ever need - or I reckon most other folks

Hi greypicker and Loki

Only just seen your posts as I have just got in from a gig ( good un to .... but ears are buzzin though )

Loki.. also nice to hear from another S10c player, and so glad to hear you are happy with it. This doesn't help me though cos I was thinking of putting mine up for sale, reason being that I want to go for an even higher spec Avalon so I must sell one of my Avalons first. The dilema is which one, cos I love em both, but I would say the A32 has the slight edge, personally speaking of course, so I think sadly the S10c is the one to try to sell. Or do I keep em both and say sod it and buy a third!!

Anyway, what about you two, are you playing for leisure and pleasure or are you gigging with ya Avalons? Loki your S10C sounds gorgeous from your description.

I might aspire to a higher range model in a few years, a nice custom Brazilian and Bearclaw confection maybe?

- but here and now in the real world I don't have a case for anything over my personal Legacy S10c. There's other guitars here for leaving the house with in most circumstances... :) - but only scrawnt necked thangs :)

In my experience maple in general will emphasise the trebles the most, followed by mahogony and Rosewood which sounds the most 'bassy.' The difference is pretty subtle though. My wife (a pianist  ) reckons she can't tell the difference between my Avalon (Spruce top, rosewood B/S) and my other acoustic (Cedar top , Rosewood b/s) and the top makes much more differnce than the rest. Your guitar sounds gorgeous anyway. :)

Jim. (number 2 I think ;) )

Hi greypicker

Yeah I agree with you, I do have two great guitars for my first acoustics, but I think I would have prefered a full bodied guitar rather than a cutaway, but you only find out when you get there.

I also know what you mean about accumulating guitars, I once did that with electrics, which I have eventually sold off over the years. But I cant afford to do that now unfortunately, so I will have to sell one if I want another doooH!

Are you looking to sell or trade any of your acoustics by any chance? Just a long shot but I had to ask.
