L10

Today, I have finally joined the ranks of Avalon owners. It's an L10, cedar top with mahogany sides. She's a beauty!

JB,

Thanks! So far, she's sweet! The arid desert environment is tough on any guitar, so she'll probably need a little bit of work in time, action and so forth. I'm doing my best to rehabilitate her with proper humidification, but these things take time.

But I have a question. The neck on my Lowden 010c has a more rounded heel - where the neck joins the body of the guitar. That gave me more options for placing a strap peg. In contrast, the heel (if that's even the right term) of the L10's neck is more pointed, so it looks like the best place to place a peg would be in the bottom of the heel, in line with the back of the guitar. Would this be your recommendation?

The L10 is nearly identical with Lowden in many respects. I was a bit surprise to see a single-piece neck on the L10. But with the abalone inlay around the sound hole, I must say the Avalon has the advantage on looks!

well it's actually a 2 piece neck :) look closely and you'll see the centre join.

strongest place is straight thru the heel-cap and I suppose being the strongest place will automatically be the best place altho' i do prefer mine on the side of the heel.

just make sure you drill the correct pilot hole first for the screw.

:)

Thanks, John, and thanks for asking. I'm no fingerstyle player, that's for certain! More of a hack, really. I play just well enough to accompany myself. But if you'd like, you can hear some stuff I recorded back in the day at:

Oops! You're right, of course.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think that's my preference as well. Just wanted to be sure it would be safe.

Drill? Did you say drill? It may be a while yet before I can bring myself to approach this baby with anything so brutal as a tool!

John,

The house at the website is actually the home we rented in Swineshead during our 16 month sojourn in the UK. I was working at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire at the time.

We were also helping plant a church in Mansfield, Notts, so we became quite familiar with the A-17 between Swineshead and Newark. With the temperatures we've been having here lately, right about now I dearly miss the cooler summers over there.

Sorry about your trouble with Real Audio. Perhaps I can remember to convert a few of the files over to mp3, so you can download them.

Glad you liked the Goldwings, too! They've certainly changed over the years. To everyone else, I apologize (apologise?) for the off-topic rambling!

All the best,

John

It is indeed! I wasn't aware Mansfield was that close to Derbyshire, though I knew it wasn't too far. The church we were working with is actually in Forest Town.

Of course, I remember the first time I looked for DARbyshire on the map, I had a difficult time of it... one of the hazards of being a foreigner, you know.

I had the same problem when my friend Miles told me about some bloke named Stuart "Tynan" - at least that's what it sounded like. His surname is actually Townend.

Cool summers in England? 38 degrees round here today!!

It's all relative. It was 42 celsius here in Vegas last night, as I was riding home from work at 8 p.m.!

Besides, the hot spells don't generally last all that long there, do they? We'll probably have highs of around 38 or higher until September.

Okay, gang, can we talk about pick-ups? This is the guitar I would have ordered from the factory, if I'd had the opportunity. The only thing I would have done would be to have the Fishman pickup installed.

How many have the factory installed Fishman set-up? Are you happy with it?
