Avalon quality

Postby Towzer » 05 May 2006, 00:58

Hello members

I weas down at the rolls royce of acoustic guitar stores in Toronto today

I was taken back as I saw an Avalon Silver Dreadnought with a custom wood shoulder addon

Tremendous finish on guitar
Trebles pronunciated
Basses nice and deep like Nat King Cole

Anyhow after playing it I must say it smashed nearly every Larrivee, Gibson ( which I have no idea what the fuss is about on this US guitar), Takamine, and Taylors

This is an offshore model of the Avalon and I must say - Well done guys

Ok I am heading home now to play my irish made Avalon A100c

I am going to try and do a sound clip for everyone....

Utterly breathtaking and I have in my possession Breedlove, Babicz and Martins and sorry folks..........................

I need to go now as my fingers are ready to be stretched....

I don't think so... :?
Avalon are greats but Larrivée too. There's a lot of difference between them, it's hard to make a comparaison.
Don't forget that if you have tried a brand new larrivée, Sitka tops need months to grow up.
Cedar sounds good instantaneously (if you've tried a cedar top avalon).
Personally , I find the sound of my larrivée OM-09 more rich and complex than my Avalon L25. (but not louder)
Just my two cents ;)
Cheers

That's the one I've got, if it's Rosewood sides, solid spruce top...

Well, except the custom wood shoulder addon...

I am VERY happy with my Silver dreadnought, but really want to own a Gold one day so that the hardworking lads at Newtownards can benefit and for the prestige of owning a top quality all solid guitar...There is no way I will every switch brands.

I know what I am talking about, I have played so many other brands, and they do not match the tone of any Avalons.

Isn't it great that I can spam Avalon stuff here!!!! :D

Yes

12th fret has an Avalon currently
Just the Silver ds101 looks like someone has traded it in

Excellent condition though and they are asking $475 with a gig bag

Hi Towser

If it is anything like the AS models I have tried it will soon get snapped up.They should become a Avalon dealership,a few nice Legacys about the place would make the shop perfect.Maybe JB can see to it.

I have a DS101 that I bought new at Christmas time for $500CDN. There was a shop in New Brunswick clearing out stock. I'm very happy with the guitar, even though they gave me some erroneous information when I bought it.

£270 (English money) is VERY reasonable for a Silver...

They still retail at £390 ($725) over here. I got mine for £410 ($763) second hand, with lefty conversion and set up. The set up I got was brilliant, the intonation is absolutely amazing!!!!

I have a DS200. Any chance of a review? Yours must be the mahogany/cedar version...

Hehe, yeah, like they tell you it has an Ebony fretboard...

I was shocked when I rang Hobgoblin instrument store to ask them of the specs...some US websites advertise the Silver Series as having ebony fretboards..

Difficult for me to write an unbiased review, this is my first acoustic guitar and I'm just learning to play, so they all sound terrible when I try them and they all sound amazing when someone else does. I am happy with it though and my friend that has a nice custom washburn says it sounds every bit as good as his.

That's probably only because he can't bring himself to admit how much better the Avalon sounds...

You made a good choice for a first guitar, methinks. I started out on a cheap Silvertone, and it was years before I got my hands on a real guitar. I'm convinced that playing such a cheap guitar for so long stunted my growth as a player...

I agree. I have just got my hands on a gold a200ce and it has opened up new doors for me in my playing. I had been playing a Vantage for the last 10 years, not a bad guitar albeit made from plywood, yatch varnish and lovely plastic trim!! :?
I firmly believe that a good guitar has the potential to make your playing better. It now seems I no longer have to "fight" with the guitar when playing some pieces, and it has also provoked me to start writing again. Something I haven't done for around a year and a half now.
Anyone out there going "ermmm" about buying an Avalon - bite the bullet and get one. Even if you start out on a silver you will very soon want a gold, but you will not be dissapointed no matter what you buy.
