Avalon doublecut??

Postby Colin Johnston » 31 Oct 2004, 02:59

What's this I hear about about one of the proto-type Carl Verheyen Avalons having a double cutaway - "like an ES335"??

We need details!! :D

A life in politics awaits you JB when you're done with guitars!! :)

By commenting that you've "no comment" you're acknowledging my comment and therefore giving rise to the suspicion that my comment was close enough to warrant a "no comment" comment... hmm... :D

So... Why would anyone want this? It's quite possible to play without hooking one's thumb over the top of the neck...

True, but depending what they do with the heel its at least going to make the dusty end of the board feel more accessable if not actually making it as easy as a Gibson SG.

All the same, it's a very cool look with great proportions - it's as right looking as an early ES335. It will be a neat marketing tool too - how many guitar mag covers would this Avalon make??!!

I think they should do the sloped top/elevated fingerboard thing a la Thomas Humphrey instead. I'd buy one of those. They're as comfortable as a cutaway but without losing so much body volume.

Very interesting (and VERY nice!), but I don't think that'd replace a cutaway for hacker like me!

You'd be surprised. I played a Cervantes (Paracho, Mexico) copy of this guitar, and it felt very much like a cutaway.

That was a really sweet guitar in every way. Wonderful guitars come out of Paracho... too bad the quality is so inconsistent. I have a paracho-made flamenco which sounds fantastic, but I had to have 5 frets moved so it'd play in tune.

I wouldn't care how good it sounded if it needed that kind of "modification"!

[rant] There's no excuse for poor quality control whether your a "boutique" maker or if you're churning them out by the thousand. [/rant]

Well, the problem is they were the top five frets, which don't get played very often, and thus were not noticed when I, in my excited state, bought the guitar.

It's a very funky guitar. Has friction pegs and everything... Yet it's the one I play the most often.

I must admit I really like the double cutaway and have wanted us to build one for a long time .... looking forward to testing the finished article 8)
