Cleaning

Postby smilingpolitely161 » 14 Feb 2006, 14:43

Hello all,
ive got 2 acoustic guitars, one with a gloss finish and one with a satin finish. I use lemon oil to clean the fretboards but ive never paid much attention to cleaning the bodies. I was wondering if anyone could suggest cleaning products/methods for the 2 types of finish ( i dont want my satin one getting too shiny etc ).
Cheers - Vick.

We use Jim Dunlop No.65 for the bodies of our Avalons. This comes in a two bottle set.One bottle is a polish/cleaner which removes the dirt and fingerprints. The other bottle is a carnuaba wax which protects the finish and gives the body a light gloss.
Alternatively just but a bottle of the No.65 polish /cleaner on its own. This will keep your guitar's body clean and is available in most music stores.

We use Punch Leather Care spray on polish, very gentle and NO SILICONE that's important.

I have read not to use any kind of polishes or cleaners on satin finishes as it tends to build up on the wood, also fills in the grains. I have also heard to just use a warm damp cloth to clean the satin finish.
These are just what I have heard so please don't just take my word for it, I would not intentionally give you incorrect info  It would be best to contact the manufacturer of the instrument to get their professional advice on this :)

JB:

I've been using the Punch Leather Polish on my satin finished guitar. Is it okay to also use it on any of my gloss nitro lacquer finished guitars?

I've been too cautious to try it on the gloss guitars. I had read a couple of years ago that you guys were using the Punch Leather Care on the satins and was able to find it. Works great. I am very unfamiliar with leather polish, hence my caution on the nitro.

Yup ... we use it on satin and gloss as it's the same nitro finish only one is steel-wooled and one is buffed.

JB:

I'm just curious. How did you guys ever come up with leather polish for use on guitars? Who thought of trying that in the first place?

I am amazed. It works so well, yet I never would have thought to try something like that. I'm sure someone looked at the chemical composition, etc., and decided it would be a good idea.

Congratulations for thinking outside the box! Being an engineer (my day job), I can appreciate that.
