Capo for Avalons Question

Postby boombox » 26 Feb 2012, 01:31

I remember reading in someone's equipment list (can't remember which artist it was, or where the list was), that he used a 12-string Shubb capo on his Lowden O32. Given an L32 is essentially the same sort of proportions, is there anyone else using a 12-string capo on their Avalon - in which case, which one. At present I have a regular brass Shubb, which is fine in the first few frets, but get up to 5th to the 7th, things seem to get a little tight and I find myself really having to increase the tension, which obviously has greater tuning implications.

I can't afford a really pricey capo, but any recommendations gratefully received.

Hi BB

It is many years since I used a 12 string capo - a Shubb - which I lost long ago! Had 6 string Shubbs as far back as I can remember.

Right now I have G7 ( easy to put on and off, but not so good higher up the stick), Planet Waves (good and functional, but the rubber wears out quickly), Shubb (best all-round - I have used them for 30+ years).

None of the above are that suitable for use above the 5th fret. IMHO, the Shubb is best.

BUT! A couple of years back I bought one of these and I just tried it up as high as the 9th and it works great! Don't know how well it will last, but I just might start gigging with it - it seems great and it is obviously easy to change keys quickly with it! Might be a bit pricey at £24, though!

Hope this helps.

£24 sems pretty good value to me. It is the over 5th fret problem which I have, especially as a fair bit of Bensusuan, Simon Fox and Dougie Maclean needs capos that high. The Shubb is great at 2-3, but not much higher.

I use a Dunlop trigger... or rather, I lose Dunlop triggers all the time...

If I was recording, and wanted perfect intonation (or as close as possible), then I'd use the venerable Shubb, and the one I have is a twelve string version which works fine.

For gigs and general playing, the trigger is fast, and because the bars are thick (cross fret wise), they spread the tension well and don't leave marks or indents on the back of the neck.

Using a capo is relatively new to me, for years I just never got round to owning one! I think it helped my playing and voicings no end, I learned all manner of 'cheats'!

Well, back last week I ordered a G7th Newport capo. When I saw Martin Simpson a few weeks back, I asked him afterwards what he was using and he was very quick to expound on the wonders of G7th capos, but stressed the Newport was the one to get. I figured if it was good enough for him...

Upshot is that it does seem very good - even up to the 7th fret. It's also got a very small profile, so when you need to move quickly back to the modified first fret, there is less chance of your hand bashing it. How long it will last though is a different matter! :)
