Guitar offered for sale

Postby bigtrevcars » 22 Nov 2010, 10:12

Hi ,

I'm just new on here and have come on looking some advice.
A friend of mine has offered to sell me his avalon guitar.I just wanted to know from a good source ie yourselves more about it.
Until I discovered this site last night my knowledge of avalon guitars was limited to 1) they were made in Newtownards. 2)They were a top end guitar. 3)The company was started by George Lowden who used to live in Silverstream in Bangor and my mate bought one of the first electrics he ever made.

Anyway more info about the guitar in question.
It is a dreadnought style with a built in pickup and graphic equaliser on the top side. It label in side was a very faded sepia image of scrabo tower. I never got the serial no. or model no, as I didn't have my glasses
The owner said the back & side were mahogany but I dont think they are. There is a clear pickguard which is almost invisible from a distance.
The downside is that there is damage to the wood just above where the equaliser is. It looks like the guitar has fallen and something has punctured a 1.5 cm gash into it. The ood is broken through but is all still there I would imagine in the correct hands this could be repaired quite easily but not being a luthier I wouldn't be 100% on that. It has the avolon logo in the head in mother of Pearl.I must admit after viewing your site this one looks fairly plain and I was wondering if this was a czech made guitar.

Can you tell me from my description
1) what model it is?
2)Where was it made?
3) What's it worth in current damaged condition?
4) Can it be repaired?
5) How much for the repair?
6) Would that repair be carried in your factory or do you have a list of authorised luthiers.
7) What would it be worth if properly repaired?
8) Would this damage have a massive effect on the sound of the guitar

I'm based in Bangor so it wouldn't be a problem getting it to you.

many thanks

Hi Trev (?)

1) what model it is? Impossible to know without the Model No.

2)Where was it made? Same as above but the MOP logo is a good sign that it was made in Newtownards.

3) What's it worth in current damaged condition? No idea without knowing the model for sure.

4) Can it be repaired? Yes

5) How much for the repair? Need to see the damage to be accurate but small cracks etc are usually fixed for less than £50

6) Would that repair be carried in your factory or do you have a list of authorised luthiers. Carried out by us in Ards workshops.

7) What would it be worth if properly repaired? Again, need the model first.

Would this damage have a massive effect on the sound of the guitar. Probably not but we can check it thoroughly if required.

Welcome to the forums and call me at the workshops if you want to chat about the guitar ...
