Is there any other Avalon with sound similar to L32?

Postby Lentin » 09 Aug 2009, 22:32

Hi, mates.
I've got a L32.
I was thinking about buying another non Jumbo guitar, but Avalon, of course.
Do you know if there is another Avalon with a sound similar to the L32 sound?
Brilliant, full of bass, good sound volume for playing at home...

The L320 will give you a similar tone and will have a few additional woody refinements!

I've previously owned a L32, and I've also owned and still own a fair selection of Avalon guitars. IMO you can't go wrong with the A sized guitars. They are not quite as big as the L series, but they are bigger than 000 sized Martins (I think), and have a deeper body. They can be loud, and they can be subtle.

The obvious choice would be the A32, but as you've already got the Spruce / Rosewood combination it might be worth thinking about a different combination. I have a Spruce / Blackwood model, and it is incredible. It's probably the first guitar I've owned that I know I will never sell. I also have another A sized model on order, which should be a bit different....

I've had a S12 guitar from the smaller bodied range - and to be honest it sounded excellent - great tone and volume. The only thing is I found it physically too small for comfort.

Have fun thinking about it, and let us know what you decide.... :)

Thanks...
I know almost nothing about guitars. So, what in your opinion could be the difference in the sound of both guitars due to the different woods they are built with? (Spruce / Rosewood versus Spruce / Blackwood)

It's very hard to describe. The Blackwood guitar has many of the same attributes as my Rosewood one, but it can be punchier and has more of an explosive bass sound. In fact I'd say that is the difference - it has a cleaner and more pronounced bass.
