C TUNING

Postby MIKE 450 » 06 Feb 2009, 13:52

CGDGAD ---I'd like to know how to tune my E string down a full tone to C --the other strings are easy because you can use the G string as a guide- and the A/D --What method do you use to find C.

I should know this but I've never tried C tuning before.

Hi
To tune down to C is 2 tones.
Turn the E string down till it matches the 4th open D (but an octave apart)
once you have have the sound of them in tune to D keep going down another tone till the E string matches the note on the A string fretted at the 3rd fret ie C.

low c

Postby dale warner » 08 Feb 2009, 18:42

Hi Mike,
I play mostly in Csus2 (CGCGCD) and Orkney (CGDGCD).
With the a string (fifth) down to g, an octave below the (third) g string, I listen for the fifth interval between the fifth and sixth strings. I then use the sixth string (now tuned to C) to get the second (b) string up to C. Expect a set of 12-54s to flap a bit and tuning of the sixth string to be off slightly after the fifth fret. You might need to tune the c very, very, very slightly flat to compensate.
Hope this helps,
Good health,
Dale

A quick way to do it is to use harmonics :
Play an harmonic at the 12th fret of the G-string, then one at the 7th fret of the low E string. Let them ring and tune the E string down until both harmonics sound in tune (an harmonic on the 7fret of a string tuned to C is a G, same as on the G-string, 12th fret).

Thanks guys for all your help,I'm playing away now in C- though I must admit this sad tuning could bring tears to the eye's. I'm to macho to sit around crying, so I think I'll try dale's orkney trick throwing the G in there could save me a fortune on tissues.

I must admit I liked C tuning "infact" I like to try all tunnings in the hope that it kickstarts the old brain to write a good song.

Thanks to everyone for your help, I sure there's plenty of other guys out there will value this info--just make sure you have a box of tissues handy LOL!
