BIG MISTAKE - STRINGS - AVALON ADVICE

Postby oldsymo » 02 Jan 2009, 22:44

Well in a previous post I requested advice on strings for my DS-100 Silver Series. After reading previous threads i thought it better to go to the shop (where I bought the guitar) and get them recommend and fit suitable strings specifically saying that I wanted strings that were of good quality that would enhance the sound of the guitar. They(the shop) recommended Elixer strings saying that they would be the strings they use. BIG MISTAKE
I now have a guitar that sounds very "tinny" and is not very enjoyable to play. Also there is a distinctive "ringing" coming from the D string when plucked with either bare finger or pick. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks

As you'll have read on the threads here, strings are a very personal thing and it sometimes takes the player to do some trial and error to finally find what they like.

If you want to try the same strings as it had originally then put on some D'Addario EXP 16 (12-53)

Many thanks for your reply. In between threads I went to back to the music shop and they checked the guitar out and discovered the ringing sound was caused by a bend or slight kink on the string. A new sting resolved the problem and the guitar sounds good although the assistant thinks it would improve by using other strings. So next time I change the strings we are going to spend a little time experimenting with strings and lowering the action.

thanks again Oldsymo

Hi,.....
I have to agree with JB, strings have always been a very subjective discussion, what suits one will not suit another, as you have found out.
I tried Elixer once, and like you hated them; I agree they sound far too bright.
I've recently experimented with a few different makes/types (see thread by tcamp22 about a month ago). I tried Everly PHb. (recommended by Tommy Emmanual). Martin SP, DR Rare, but eventually came back to by regular string......D'Addario 80/20 bronze.

My advice?.......try different strings but once you're happy......stick with 'em!!

Cheers.........Brian.

I use Elixer on my Fylde and they're an absolute revelation to me, they sound amazing and just last soooo long! I'm constantly tuning up and down with them due to playing a lot of songs in alternate tunigns as well but they still keep sounding awesome and in the 18 months i've used them i've not had one snap yet!

I guess it must be just a case of 'horses for courses'?r

That says it all - I have the exact same guitar as yourself oldsymo, and I think Elixir Nanowebs sound great on mine. All about personal taste! And I also think your playing style and accessories make a difference - do you flatpick, play rhythm, fingerpick? What width of pick do you use, do you use nails, what type of thumbpick, etc, etc? I know my sound and tone change when I use any other gear than what I usually do.

Like onemanband suggests - try different strings until you hit the guitar's sweet spot for yourself and your sound.
